Timeline for Churches of Rochester

1801
Organization of the Congregational Society.

1813
The Congregational Meeting House “on the hill” is ready for occupancy.

1827
A Methodist Church is erected. The building’s has served as a church, school, basketball gymnasium, youth hostel, and is now a private residence.

1849
The Universalist Society builds its own church, which today is home to the Public Library and the Rochester Historical Society Museum.

1925
The Congregational and Universalist Societies join together as the United Church.

1934
The Methodist Church joins with the United Church, becoming the Federated Church of Rochester.

1939
St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church is consecrated.

1944
Fire destroys the Federated Church.

1950
On July 16, a Verde Antique marble cornerstone is laid at the Federated Church.

1953
The newly-constructed Federated Church is formally dedicated on July 12.
